DHAKA – An article from Prothom Alo introduces a unique fruit known as “Egg Fruit,” which is also called “Tisa Fruit” or “Canistel.” The author first encountered this fruit near a Buddhist temple in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The fruit is shaped like a spindle, and its pulp has a texture and taste similar to a sweet egg yolk.
The author recalls first seeing this fruit in Bangladesh about ten years ago, where it was known as “Zaman Fruit” after agricultural scientist Hasanuzzaman. Later, horticulturalist S. M. Kamruzzaman renamed it “Tisa Fruit.”
The article notes that the seeds of this tree quickly lose their vitality, so they must be planted soon after being collected from ripe fruit. The egg fruit tree is an evergreen and can grow up to 30 meters tall. Ripe egg fruit can be used to make pancakes, jams, and marmalades. The fruit is native to Southern Mexico and is currently not easily available in Bangladesh.
