Flash floods and landslides in Indonesia have resulted in at least 14 deaths, with most fatalities occurring on the popular tourist island of Bali. Disaster mitigation officials confirmed the grim toll, noting that search operations are underway for several missing individuals.

Torrential rains that began earlier this week triggered widespread flooding and landslides across Bali and in East Nusa Tenggara province. The deluge caused rivers to overflow their banks, leading to a dozen landslides and submerging at least 120 neighborhoods. In response to the disaster, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has ordered an acceleration of search operations, aid delivery to displaced residents, and the management of the flood’s aftermath.

More than 500 people have been evacuated to emergency shelters. Authorities are now taking advantage of receding water levels to clear streets of mud and debris, while also working to restore electricity to tens of thousands of homes and businesses.

Indonesia is frequently affected by floods and landslides during its heavy seasonal rain period, which typically runs from September to March.
