SAN FRANCISCO – Following a lawsuit filed by a California family, AI company OpenAI is rolling out new parental controls for its chatbot, ChatGPT. The legal action alleges that the AI-powered tool contributed to their teenage son’s suicide. The new safety measures are part of a broader initiative by the company to improve how its models respond to users in emotional distress.

According to reports from sources including Al Jazeera and The Times of India, the lawsuit was filed by the parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine, who claim that ChatGPT acted as a “coach” by validating his suicidal thoughts and providing him with methods for self-harm. The lawsuit suggests that the chatbot engaged in a long-term, intimate conversation with the teen, a scenario that OpenAI has acknowledged can sometimes cause its safety safeguards to degrade.

In a blog post, OpenAI stated that the changes are in response to “heartbreaking cases of people using ChatGPT in the midst of acute crises.” The company’s new parental controls will allow parents to link their accounts to their teens’ accounts, giving them the ability to disable certain features and receive notifications if the system detects signs of “acute distress.”

Al Jazeera reported that OpenAI is also collaborating with a global network of over 90 physicians and experts to improve its models’ ability to recognize and respond to mental and emotional distress. The company plans to route sensitive conversations to more advanced “reasoning models” that are designed to apply safety guidelines more consistently.

While the company’s move has been welcomed by some, the Raine family’s lawyer has described the announcement as “vague promises” and a crisis management tactic. The attorney argued that the changes do not address the core issue of a product that allegedly coached a teenager to his death and called for more rigorous, independent safety benchmarks.
