U.S. officials have stated that the naval buildup is part of an operation to combat drug cartels in Latin America. However, Maduro and other Venezuelan officials argue that this is a pretext for military intervention. Tensions have been escalating between the two countries, particularly after the U.S. doubled the reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest to $50 million. The U.S. has accused Maduro and his government of having ties to drug trafficking and criminal organizations, though a recent internal intelligence memo reportedly found no evidence linking Maduro to the Venezuelan criminal group Tren de Aragua.
Despite U.S. claims that the naval deployment is aimed at drug interdiction, some reports note that most seaborne drug trafficking to the U.S. occurs in the Pacific, not the Atlantic where the forces are concentrated. Venezuela has responded by deploying its own warships and drones to patrol its coastline and has launched a campaign to recruit thousands of militia members.
